Cataract Surgery Donation

An elderly patient having their eye examined after a donated cataract operation

About This Project

Cataract is a treatable loss of sight, yet for those without the means it can mean a lifetime of darkness. With a simple operation we help someone to see again.

The operations are carried out by specialist doctors under appropriate medical conditions.

A cataract operation lets someone see the world again.

About the Cataract Surgery Donation: Turn Darkness into Light

A cataract surgery donation is a way to give sight back to someone who lost it only because they could not afford treatment, even though it is curable.

At Austria Yetim Eli we cover cataract operations for patients without the means in regions in need, at 100 € per operation.

What is cataract and why does it matter so much?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens; vision gradually deteriorates.

The good news: cataract is a loss of sight that can be treated with surgery.

The bad news is that for those without the means this simple operation remains out of reach. A father who cannot see cannot work, a mother who cannot see cannot run her home, and elderly people become dependent on others.

How is your donation used?

  • The operations are performed by specialist doctors.
  • The procedure is carried out under appropriate medical conditions.
  • Priority is given to people in need who can no longer manage daily life because of cataracts.

Example calculation: cataract donation from Austria

  • 1 operation: 100 €
  • 2 operations on behalf of your parents: 2 × 100 € = 200 €
  • 10 operations as a family or mosque congregation: 1.000 €

Choose the quantity in the form above. You can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, EPS or PayPal; after your donation you receive a thank-you by e-mail and, once the payment is confirmed, a donation receipt.

Health donations from Austria: a small amount, a big difference

In Austria, thanks to health insurance, cataract surgery is a routine procedure for most of us.

Yet in many parts of the world the same operation is an expense a family could not save up for in months.

That is why 100 € – the price of a dinner or a few days' shopping here – can enable someone there to read, work and see their grandchildren's faces again.

You might also consider this donation as an act of thanks for the health of your parents and elders.

Can a cataract donation be given as Sadaqah and with the intention of healing?

Yes. Supporting the treatment of a sick person is one of the finest forms of Sadaqah.

You can also donate a cataract operation with the intention of healing for a sick loved one. You can write the name or your intention in the note field at the payment step.

For the meaning and types of Sadaqah, see our article What is Sadaqah?.

If you are thinking of directing your Zakat to a patient's treatment, read who can receive Zakat; if in doubt, ask a religious scholar or imam.
