Why donate Zakat and Qurbani online from Vienna?

Life in a big city moves fast. Between work, school and commuting, it is often hard to go somewhere specially to make a donation.

Online donation has three clear benefits for people living in Vienna:

  • Time: done in a few minutes on your phone on the U-Bahn or during your lunch break.
  • Records: every donation is logged in the system; the thank-you and receipt emails remain with you as written documentation.
  • Combined payment: with the basket system you can give Zakat, Fitrah and Qurbani in one payment.

Austria Yetim Eli is an association based in Innsbruck, founded under Austrian association law. Donations from Vienna go through the same process as those from Tyrol.

For information specific to Innsbruck and Tyrol, see our Innsbruck guide to Zakat, Qurbani and Sadaqah.

What is EPS, and how do you donate from Vienna with EPS?

EPS (eps-Überweisung) is a payment method that works through the online banking of Austrian banks. You don't enter any card details; you approve the payment with your own banking app.

For many people who don't use a credit card or only use a debit card (Debitkarte), it is the most convenient option.

Steps to donate with EPS

  1. Choose the project you want to donate to and add it to your basket.
  2. Enter your name, email address and phone number.
  3. Select Card / Online as the payment method.
  4. On the secure payment page, choose EPS and your bank.
  5. Confirm the payment in your bank's online banking or app.
  6. You return to our website; you receive a thank-you email and, once the payment is confirmed, your receipt.

You can see which banks work with EPS on the official eps-Überweisung website.

Note: Your card, EPS or PayPal details are not stored on our website; the payment is made on the provider's secure page. If you prefer a bank transfer, the IBAN details are on our bank accounts page.

Calculating Zakat in Vienna: example scenarios

Zakat is given at a rate of 2,5% on savings that reach the Nisab and over which one lunar year has passed. The Nisab used by the Diyanet is 80,18 grams of gold.

Example calculation 1: Salaried employee

Example scenario: Someone working in Vienna has savings of €14.000 that stayed above the Nisab for a whole year. Basic needs such as rent and debts that have fallen due have already been set aside.

  • Nisab check: if a gram of gold costs about €100, the Nisab is roughly €8.018; the savings are above the Nisab.
  • Zakat: 14.000 × 0,025 = 350 €

Example calculation 2: Small business owner

Example scenario: A person running a shop in Vienna has €20.000 worth of trade goods waiting to be sold and €6.000 in cash; they owe €4.000 to suppliers.

  • Net assets subject to Zakat: 20.000 + 6.000 − 4.000 = 22.000 €
  • Zakat: 22.000 × 0,025 = 550 €

Trade goods are valued not at their purchase price but at their market value on the Zakat date. In complex cases such as business Zakat, we recommend consulting an imam.

For the step-by-step method see our article calculating Zakat in Austria, and for the basics What is Zakat.

2027 calendar: important dates for donating from Vienna

According to the Diyanet calendar, these are the important days of 2027:

DayDateWhat it means for donations
First day of Ramadan8 February 2027Zakat, Iftar and food parcel donations
Eid al-Fitr9–11 March 2027Fitrah must be delivered before the Eid prayer
Day before Eid al-Adha (Day of Arafah)15 May 2027Complete your Qurbani donation before this date
Eid al-Adha16–19 May 2027Days of sacrifice for Wajib Qurbani

Many people give their Zakat in Ramadan; however, Zakat becomes due as soon as a year has passed, and there is no need to wait for Ramadan.

On our website Fitrah is €15 per person. Example calculation: for a family of 4, 4 × €15 = €60. Details: Fitrah 2027 Austria and Ramadan 2027 donation guide.

Qurbani donation from Vienna: how does slaughter by proxy work?

In Austria, the slaughter of animals is subject to animal protection law; performing Qurbani at home or in the garden is generally not possible in practice. That is why many families living in Vienna have their Qurbani performed by proxy in regions of need.

The proxy is the authority you give the organisation to perform the Qurbani on your behalf. We cover the religious aspect in our article Qurbani by proxy.

Steps for a Qurbani donation

  1. Choose the region from the Qurbani projects.
  2. Choose the type of Qurbani: Wajib, Nadhr, Aqiqah, Shukr, healing or Sadaqah Qurbani.
  3. Choose the quantity and enter on whose behalf it is to be performed.
  4. For several animals, state whether they are all on behalf of the same person or of different people.
  5. Complete the payment; after the slaughter the video is sent to your phone (Türkiye: WhatsApp, other regions: SMS).

Example scenario: proxy for 3 people in Vienna

A family wants to give two Wajib Qurbani on behalf of the father and mother, and an Aqiqah Qurbani for their newborn child. Since a small-animal Qurbani in Africa costs €100:

  • 2 Wajib Qurbani × €100 = €200 (each with a separate name)
  • 1 Aqiqah Qurbani × €100 = €100
  • Total: €300, in one payment

Other regions: Yemen, Afghanistan and Asia €150; Syria and Lebanon €175; Palestine €250; Türkiye €250. Large-animal shares start from €700 in Africa.

All the details are in the guide Qurbani donation from Austria 2027. You can read who Qurbani is wajib for in this article.

Iftar and food aid from Vienna in Ramadan

Ramadan is the time when many families in Vienna concentrate their donations. Alongside Zakat and Fitrah, Iftar and food donations are also very popular.

Example scenario: a workplace in Vienna gives a joint Iftar

5 colleagues working at the same workplace want to make a joint Iftar donation, each contributing €70.

  • Total: 5 × €70 = 350 €
  • This amount corresponds to an Iftar for 100 people (100 × €3,50).
  • Since it is an Iftar for 100+ people, a video is shared.

Having one person make the donation in one go from the basket makes tracking and communication easier.

Palestine and emergency aid from Vienna

A large share of donations from Vienna goes to urgent humanitarian needs. The Palestine Emergency Aid project covers food, water, medicine and shelter.

If you would like to choose a specific item: hot meal €4 per person, bread €4 per day, hygiene kit €50, water tanker €350 per trip.

For detailed information, see our guide Donating to Palestine from Austria.

Wien Spende: for German-speaking family members

Some young people who grew up in Vienna prefer to search for religious terms in German, such as “Zakat spenden Wien” or “Opferfest Spende”.

Our website is available in Turkish, German and English, and the payment page and bank confirmation screens work the way people in Austria are used to. If you get stuck at any point, our support line (+43 676 520 35 35, phone and WhatsApp) will help — in Turkish too.

If you are looking for an ongoing good deed besides Zakat, take a look at Sadaqah Jariyah projects such as monthly orphan sponsorship (€50/month) or a water well donation.

Note: Whether donations are tax-deductible depends on whether the organisation is on the BMF's list of spendenbegünstigte Einrichtungen (tax-privileged charities). Details are in our article Are donations tax-deductible in Austria?; you are welcome to ask us about Austria Yetim Eli's current status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which organisation should I give my Zakat to in Vienna?

Choose a registered organisation with openly stated contact details that issues receipts and uses secure payment methods. For a checklist, see our article choosing a trustworthy charity.

Is donating with EPS safe?

With EPS you confirm the payment in your own bank's online banking; your bank login details are never entered on the donation website. Still, always check the address bar for the correct website and a secure connection.

What is the last day for a Qurbani donation from Vienna?

In 2027, Eid al-Adha falls on 16–19 May, with the Day of Arafah on 15 May. To make sure your donation is included in the slaughter schedule, we recommend completing it a few days before Eid.

No. Zakat becomes due when one lunar year has passed over savings that reach the Nisab. Giving it in Ramadan is a common choice, but not a requirement.

A thank-you email is sent immediately after the donation, and an email with the donation receipt once the payment is confirmed. Make sure you enter your email address correctly.

Can I make several donations in one payment?

Yes. With the basket system you can give Zakat, Fitrah, Qurbani and other projects together in one payment.
